Volunteering is often described as a journey of self-discovery, and my experience in Romania truly transformed me. As an Armenian girl stepping into a new culture, everything felt both exciting and challenging. From the very beginning, I was touched by the warmth of the people, the richness of the culture, and the sense of community I found there.
Working with children from disadvantaged backgrounds was one of the most meaningful parts of my journey. Their resilience, kindness, and strength taught me that empathy and human connection are sometimes more powerful than any material support. I learned how important it is to listen, to believe in others, and to offer presence, not just help.
Living and volunteering in Romania pushed me far beyond my comfort zone. I learned to adapt to a new environment, communicate in a different language, and face challenges with confidence. The international friendships I built showed me that, despite our different cultures, we share the same values and hopes.
This experience reshaped my identity and perspective on life. I returned to Armenia with a deeper appreciation for diversity, a stronger sense of independence, and a renewed purpose to continue giving back. For me, volunteering was not only about helping others—it was about growing, learning, and discovering who I am.
